Gerald Paul Bradley
A Life of Service to Family, Community, Faith, and Heritage
Early Life & Family
Gerald Paul Bradley was born on 8 October 1939 in Lilly, Pennsylvania, the son of James Marvin “Mony” Bradley and Mary Cecilia (Beck) Bradley. He married Christine Rosemary Fornbacher on 13 July 1963, and together they raised their family in Altoona. Their marriage lasted more than sixty years until Christine’s passing in 2024.
They are the parents of Carl, Kathleen, Mary, Barbara, Denise, and the late Theresa. Gerald continues to reside in Altoona, where he has been a lifelong presence in community and parish life.
Community & Civic Involvement
A dedicated supporter of Altoona’s cultural and fraternal traditions, Gerald has been active in many local organisations, including the Knights of Columbus, Catholic War Veterans, Irish Club, Polish American Citizens Club, Unter Uns, Frohsinn Club, and the Concordia Singing Society.
He is especially remembered for his leadership during Altoona’s Sesquicentennial Celebration (1999), where he helped organise the fundraising campaign for the Gospel Hill Flag, a project that united local schools and families in a citywide patriotic effort.
Military Service
Gerald served honourably in both the United States Air Force and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
-
U.S. Air Force (1950s–60s): Overseas duty in Morocco and later at Andrews Air Force Base, supporting Cold War–era operations.
-
PA Army National Guard (1982–1998): Served with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 112th Infantry Regiment, participating in training, emergency response missions, and support roles during the Bosnia peacekeeping era.
He retired from the Guard in 1998, completing a combined military career marked by discipline, service, and patriotism.
Catholic & Fraternal Leadership
Gerald has been a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, Altoona Council 551, serving in leadership roles including Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight. As a Fourth Degree Sir Knight of the Bishop Garvey Assembly, he participated in honour guards, religious processions, funeral rites, and patriotic ceremonies.
He also served in other Catholic fraternal organisations, including the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and the Catholic Knights of St. George, where he held the office of Supreme President.
The Gospel Hill Flag
One of Gerald’s most visible contributions is the Gospel Hill Flag, the large American flag overlooking Altoona. As part of the Sesquicentennial Commission, he helped lead the fundraising effort that involved every public and parochial school in the area.
Children collected loose change that filled barrels, ultimately raising $50,000 for the project. Gerald later recalled the pride of showing his grandchildren the engraved marker listing the schools and supporters who made the flag possible.
Royal Lineage
According to the genealogical records of the Royal House of Bradley (Ui Bhrolchain), Gerald served as H.R.H. Prince Gerald Paul Bradley from 1976 until his abdication in 2024.
The family traces its heritage to the Ui Bhrolchain of County Tyrone, part of the Cenél Eóghain, traditionally descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages. Upon his abdication, the title passed to his son, H.R.H. Prince Carl Raymond Bradley.
Legacy
Across military service, civic leadership, Catholic devotion, and the preservation of ancient family heritage, Gerald Paul Bradley has lived a life defined by duty and community. His contributions continue to shape Altoona and the House of Bradley, leaving a legacy of honour for future generations.
